Our Story
A dance school for everybody & every BODY
A Fine Dance Studio opened its doors in 2009 with one mission: bridging the gap between art and athletics. Some children come to us for fun and friendship, with no pressure. Others dream of a career in the performing arts and know that we can take them there. Either way, the training is the same at its core: well rounded, fitness forward, and built on body control, body awareness and real athleticism, so dancers leave every class a little stronger than they arrived.
What we care about most is who they become along the way. We take our mentorship of these children seriously, and our goal is to build kind and hard working humans, not just dancers and artists. Improved confidence. Determination and responsibility. Kindness, patience, grace and self love. With programs for all ages and levels, and a focus on body positivity, acceptance and inclusion, we are known as a dance school for everybody and every BODY.

A Fine Impact
Our 501(c)(3) nonprofit ensures that every child, regardless of financial circumstance, can experience the joy, discipline, and empowerment that dance provides.
Dance and fitness educators. Between them our faculty hold degrees and certifications in dance, exercise physiology, athletic training, physical therapy, acrobatics, nutrition and youth mental health, and they bring all of it into the studio every week. Technique matters to them, and so does the child in front of them: every teacher here is chosen for patience, kindness, professionalism, and a gift for building confidence.
Abigail Fine

Multi-time Director of the Year
A certified dance educator, Abigail is the heart behind AFDS. Her training spans ballet, tap, jazz, acrobatics, hip hop, lyrical, modern, baton twirling and musical theater, combined with degrees in Exercise Physiology, Nutrition and Health, and Dance and Somatic Movement Therapy. She stays current in youth mental health training and advocacy, and founded A Fine Impact to remove financial barriers to dance education.
Robin Fine
Office Manager & Studio "Grandma"

A mother of two and grandmother of four, Robin brings over 50 years of professional experience and warmth to everything she does. Schedules, camps, class placement, a missing shoe: she is the one to ask, and if she does not know, she knows who does. Often the first face you see.
Morgan Reinbold
Assistant Director · Teacher & Choreographer
8th Season at AFDS
Trained in acrobatics, jazz, ballet, contemporary, lyrical and tap since childhood. A proud Emerson College graduate with a Business degree specializing in Leadership, Management and Psychology. Morgan is a certified Flexologist and holds NASM and Acrobatic Arts certifications. She supports both the artistic vision of the studio and the operations behind it.
Jenna Lee
Athletic Trainer & Fitness Professional · PBT Instructor
14th Season at AFDS (since 2009)
With AFDS since it opened in 2009. Jenna holds multiple degrees and health and fitness certifications, and is certified in Progressing Ballet Technique. She supports our dancers with expertise in athletic training and injury prevention, and makes learning fun, motivating and health focused.
Brittany Safran

16th Season at AFDS
A mother of three with over 25 years of performance and competition experience. She earned her BFA in Dance from Dean College with a focus on choreography and pedagogy, and performed with Perceptions Contemporary Dance Company and The Boston Tap Company. She is also a licensed Physical Therapist Assistant, bringing a real understanding of movement and injury prevention to class.
Natalia Valdivia

Originally from northern New Jersey, Natalia has been dancing since age 4. Her training spans ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop, contemporary, lyrical and cheer/pom. She studied Arts Administration, Business Management and Dance at Elon University and danced with Elon's Finest Hip Hop Team.
Juliet Brown
Teacher & Mentor · Ballet
5th Season at AFDS
Juliet trained at Boston Ballet School and South Shore Ballet Theatre, danced professionally with Columbia Classical Ballet and Paris Opera Ballet, and currently dances with City Ballet Boston. Her repertoire includes The Nutcracker, La Bayadere and Cinderella. She makes ballet fun and challenging at the same time.

Brandie joins us from Connecticut, where she owned Powerhouse Dance for 10 years. A celebrated teacher throughout the industry, she brings a structured but fun approach that keeps a class moving while still meeting each dancer where they are. Learning to Teach
A Fine Apprentices
Our apprentices are advanced AFDS students learning to teach while they keep learning to dance. For a little dancer, an apprentice is the one who ties the ribbon, finds the lost shoe and shows them the step one more time.
Apprentices are in class alongside your dancer, demonstrating and helping the teacher and the kids with whatever is needed. They are encouraged to lead sections of class while our faculty mentor them through it. As they progress, they earn bigger opportunities, and by their junior and senior year of high school that can mean their own classes and their own choreography, fully supervised and mentored throughout.
All those years of investment in dance should open a door. If a dancer one day wants to work in the dance world, this is where that starts.
Approved substitutes, and CORI checks
Teachers occasionally travel, perform or get sick. When that happens your dancer is never handed to a stranger. We keep an extensive list of AFDS alumni and guest faculty approved to cover classes.
Every member of our faculty and every approved substitute is CORI checked annually.

Our competition program is comprised of the very best and most humble and friendly dancers in the metro west area, hands down. The training is fun yet rigorous, fitness forward, and designed to inspire dancers with the determination to push themselves. Humble, hardworking and kind to one another, with the teamwork, accountability and professionalism that competition demands: that is what makes this team feel like family. Our dancers go on to be professional working performers as well as having successful college or post high-school dance experiences.

Two things to know
Schedules arrive about 7 days before the weekend. We do not have the times any earlier, so please hold the whole weekend until the schedule comes.
March is different for Team. Team dancers do not compete at Accelerate. They are required to come and watch for two hours. It shows them how a competition day runs, so April feels familiar instead of overwhelming, and lets parents see the routine too.
Required means required. October 25 is required for Team and November 1 is required for Company. Everything marked optional add on is a choice. If you are unsure whether your dancer is entered, message us in the app.

Wearing all black helps us focus on dance, not fashion. It keeps the room about body awareness and technique, and it puts every dancer on equal footing, which is part of how we build acceptance and body positivity. The only exception is Color Week, the 1st through the 7th of every month, when dancers can wear any colors they like.
Ballet students

Remove all jewelry at home, or leave it in your dance bag.
If a clean leotard is not available, black spandex shorts and a black spandex top are permitted, but we prefer a leotard.
Why the bun matters. Hair out of the face lets a dancer see their alignment in the mirror and lets the teacher see their neck and shoulders. It is part of the training, not just the look.

Before you buy anything
Wrong color is fine for now. If your dancer has shoes that fit but they are not the color or style listed above, keep wearing them. Replace them with the right pair when their feet grow. No need to buy a second pair of something that still fits.
Pack socks, every time. Send a clean pair in the dance bag in case shoes do not fit. It happens more than you would think, and it means class is never a loss.

Completely fine. Just match the style numbers above.
Leave room to grow in tap and jazz. Stores often size these too small and children outgrow them far sooner than they should. A slightly roomy shoe with a sock beats a snug one. Ballet is the exception, those should fit properly.
Lice. Dancers suspected of having lice may not attend class. We do partner work and share acrobatics mats, so it spreads quickly. Please take care of it before they come back to dance.

Find class files and music
Open the Studio Pro Parent Portal app and log in.

When files appear. Music and videos are uploaded once a class begins its choreography, so the folder is empty until then. Synergy files come first, as those groups start choreography earlier.

Drop off and pick up
It is a circular drop off, the same as at school. Please follow it every time, even when the lot looks empty.
Dropping off
Come down Reservoir Street slowly.
Turn left into the lot.
Stop at the handicap ramp and drop off. If you want to walk them up, park along the highway or in an unmarked spot first.
Turn left out between the two green cones.

Safety
We do not check dancers out. If anyone is not permitted to pick up your child, tell us in writing and send any paperwork that goes with it.
Three places you cannot park. Marked spaces, which belong to the other businesses in the lot. The striped diagonal lines, where a car sticks out into the road. The gap between the four green cones, which is the exit everyone drives out through.
Saying goodbye at the door
It is natural for a child not to want to leave someone they love, at any age. A short, warm goodbye helps most.
“I love you. You are safe and loved here. I will see you after class. Have fun.”
Then go. We will take it from there, gently and kindly. If a child struggles for more than five minutes, we will call you.
How we do things
Dance asks a lot of a child. It asks them to be looked at, corrected, and to keep trying something they cannot do yet. That kind of growth only happens in a safe space built on trust and honesty, where everyone belongs. Here is what we ask, and what we promise in return.
We ask dancers to
Encourage each other with kindness, and take responsibility for their own effort. Nobody is ahead or behind, they are just somewhere in their own training.
We ask families to
Show courtesy to our staff, to other families, and to dancers who are not your own. In the lobby, at competitions, and online. That courtesy is what keeps this studio a second home for every family.
We promise
To treat every dancer with patience, care and integrity, whatever kind of day they are having, and to be honest with you about how they are doing.
Please come to us early. If something does not feel right, tell us before it grows.
Showing up
Regular attendance builds self confidence and belief in themselves. It teaches them that we do not give up when something is hard, and it builds grit and resilience. Those are life skills they will use in every walk of life, not just in a dance studio.
Seeing it through
A season is a promise. When a dancer joins a class, a room of children and a teacher begin building something that depends on them being there.
Most dancers hit a stretch where they want to stop. That is worth taking seriously, and it is usually also where the lesson lives. Finishing teaches a child that hard stretches pass, that their word means something, and that what is waiting on the other side is worth reaching.
If dance is not what they want next year, we completely respect that. Let us encourage them together to finish the year they committed to.

Paying by Zelle. Card and electronic payments through Studio Pro carry a processing fee. Paying by Zelle to abigail@afdance.com on the 25th of the month, before the payment date, avoids it. Put your dancer's name in the Zelle notes, or we cannot tell whose account the payment belongs to.
Payments not received by the due date incur a 5% late fee. If the timing is difficult, talk to us before the date rather than after a payment declines, and we will work with you.
Keep your card current. If it is replaced or expires, update it in the app so these charges go through.

During winter break, private lesson blocks are available December 21 to 23. Staycation Camp runs inside two of these closures, February 15 to 19 and April 19 to 23.
❄ Inclement weather. We do not automatically follow Needham Public Schools, and every storm is decided on its own. If we close, you will get an email and a chat message, and we post on Instagram and usually Facebook. If we stay open and you are not comfortable driving, do not drive. If a class is cancelled we will tell you whether a make up is being scheduled or a credit is going to your account.
Color Week
Dancers wear any color dance attire they like instead of the required black. It runs the 1st through the 7th of every month, with two exceptions: January shifts to the 4th through the 10th because we are closed for winter break through January 3, and June runs the 2nd through the 8th, our last week of classes.
On town early release days we run an afterschool camp at the studio. Registration is open. In the app, tap Register. Spots are limited.

Color Week

How Recital Weekend Works
2026 Show Dates & Venue
All three 2026 shows take place at the Medfield High School Auditorium · Door 17.
Show A: Saturday, June 13, 2026 · 1:00 PM (dancers arrive 12:00 PM, ends ~3:30 PM)
Show B: Sunday, June 14, 2026 · 10:00 AM (dancers arrive 8:45 AM, ends ~12:30 PM)
Costume pick-up happens during your dancer's regular class time. At the same session, we'll walk through everything you need to know for the recital and dancers will run their routines in costume.
1 adult per dancer, please
If possible, arrange childcare for younger siblings. It keeps the session focused and we truly appreciate it
Costumes go home that night

Stage rehearsals are held at Medfield HS Auditorium (Door 17) in the days leading up to the show. Each class has its own slot. Find yours on your dancer's personalized schedule.

My Dancer & Me is one of the most-loved moments of recital weekend: a special on-stage number where a grown-up joins their dancer for a sweet routine together. Memories that last a lifetime.
2026 sign-ups closed May 1, 2026. If your dancer is registered, the dedicated participant site below has your full schedule, rehearsal details, and recital info.
2026 rehearsal at the studio:
Show A participants: 9:00 AM – 11:30 AM
Show B participants: 12:00 PM – 2:30 PM
My Dancer & Me dancers attend the recital free (no ticket needed for the dancer).
Each dancer needs the correct tights and shoes for every routine. Specifics are in the by-class breakdown PDF on the 2026 site.
Tights: one new, unworn pair per costume, no runs, no snags. Order an extra pair; runs happen backstage.
Shoes: clean, dance-only (no outdoor wear). Replace if scuffed or outgrown.
Undergarments: nude leotard or nude undergarments only. No visible bra straps, underwear lines, or colored undergarments
Hair & Makeup
Stage lights wash out features, so every dancer wears performance makeup, even our youngest dancers, so they don't look pale on stage. Guidelines keep the look uniform across each routine.
Hair: slicked-back low bun is the default for most classes. Hip Hop and select numbers may have a different style. Your teacher will confirm. Gel, hairspray, and a hairnet keep it secure under stage lights.
Makeup: foundation, blush, neutral eyeshadow, mascara, and red lipstick. Specific colors and any class-specific variations are reviewed at your costume pick-up & info session.
Arrival & Backstage
Dancers arrive at Door 17 of Medfield HS Auditorium in full hair & makeup, dressed in costume #1, at their show's call time:
Show A (1:00 PM): arrive by 12:00 PM
Show B (10:00 AM): arrive by 8:45 AM
SDC Showcase (3:00 PM): arrive by 2:00 PM
A parent or guardian signs each dancer in. Dancers stay in supervised dressing rooms between routines, and at the end of the show they're released only to a parent or guardian.
Flowers for Your Dancer
We partner with a local florist so you can pre-order bouquets and pick them up at the show, with no trip to the store on recital morning.
Pre-ordering for 2026 is closed. We'll share the order link and deadline here when it opens for Recital 2027.

The 2026 digital program is downloadable from the recital site and includes the full lineup, routine names, genres, and every dancer's name.
Our incredible faculty and staff have backstage covered, so we don't typically need additional volunteers behind the scenes on show day. That said, we are so grateful when families want to pitch in!
If you'd like to help in other front-of-house ways, like welcoming families at the door, handing out programs, supporting the lobby, or lending a hand with anything else recital-related, we'd love to hear from you.

What to Bring & Leave Home
Bring (in a labeled garment bag or rolling tote):
Every costume on hangers, in performance order, fully accessorized
All shoes in a labeled bag
Extra tights
Hair kit: brush, gel, hairspray, bobby pins, hairnets, extra ties
Makeup kit for touch-ups (full face applied before arrival)
Water bottle and non-messy, non-staining snacks (no chocolate, no red juice)
A book, coloring pages, or quiet activity for downtime backstage
Leave at home: jewelry (unless part of the costume), nail polish, electronics, and anything valuable you'd be heartbroken to lose in a busy dressing room.

The SDC Showcase & Senior Send Off on Sunday, June 14, 2026 at 3:00 PM is a special celebration of our Synergy Company & Team dancers and a heartfelt send-off for our graduating seniors.
Dancers in their final year at AFDS are honored with a tribute moment on stage. It's one of the most emotional and joyful afternoons of the year.

Birthday Parties 🎉
Make your event unforgettable. Our party packages are customizable and include disco party lights, dancing, games, and memories that will last forever. A room full of friends and a whole lot of fun: you bring the guests, we bring the party.
These super fun, drop off parties (geared towards children 5+) begin with 1 hour of high energy dancing, games and contests, then include choreography (upon request). The party then moves to the party area to enjoy birthday cake and some beverages (provided by client). Once guests are done eating, the party moves back into the studio to enjoy more fun dancing until pick up.
Each party is customized to meet the guest of honor's birthday wishes: themes, special choreography, games and much more.

Disco Dance Sleep Under Party
Each party begins with 30–45 minutes of high energy dancing, games and contests, then about 15 minutes in the party room for dinner (provided by client). Then about 30–45 minutes learning special choreography to the guest of honor's favorite song. Next everyone changes into their pajamas and comes back to the party room for birthday cake (provided by client). Once the guests are done eating, the party moves into the movie theater to snuggle up and watch an age-appropriate movie (provided by client). The party concludes with more dancing until pickup.
